The following information is from the Legal Aid Office (ACT) and was last updated September 2006. Free Legal Services PDF Version Aboriginal Legal Service (ACT/NSW) The Aboriginal Legal Service provides legal advice and representation for indigenous people in the ACT, Queanbeyan, Yass, Goulburn and Cooma. ACT Human Rights Office The HRO promotes human rights in the ACT by administering the Discrimination Act and the Human Rights Act. The HRO investigates and conciliates complaints of discrimination, sexual harassment and vilification. ACT Office of Fair Trading The OFT provides information to consumers to help them be informed and confident when purchasing goods and services. ACT Victims of Crime Co-ordinator The VoCC is an advocate and information source for victims of crime. The VoCC promotes reforms in the law and in services for victims of crime and implements projects to improve responses to victims of crime. Care Inc. & The Consumer Law Centre of the ACT Care provides financial counselling for people on low incomes who have debt or other financial problems. The after-hours service is available on Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The CLC provides free legal assistance and advice to low or moderate income consumers on issues of consumer credit, telecommunications, utilities, fair trading and consumer protection. Community and Health Services Complaints Commissioner The CHSCC receives complaints from consumers who may be dissatisfied with a health service, aged care service, or a service for people with a disability and their carers. The CHSCC works with consumers and providers to resolve complaints. Conflict Resolution Service The CRS assists people to resolve their conflicts peacefully and provides mediation for a wide range of disputes and offers community education in conflict management. The CRS is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Mediation sessions can be arranged after hours or on Saturday, please phone for an appointment. Disability Discrimination Legal Service The DDLS provides free legal advice and assistance for people who have been discriminated against based on their disability. Open on Thursday from 9.30am to 1.00pm and Friday from 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Environmental Defender's Office The EDO provides legal advice and representation on environmental law issues. Open from 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday. First Stop - Youth Legal and Referral Service First Stop is a drop-in legal and referral service for young people aged 12-25 years. First Stop provides information and assistance on issues such as employment, fines, income support, debt, discrimination, housing, criminal matters, problems at school and other legal issues. Open from 1.00pm to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Law Society of the ACT The Law Society provides free legal advice by appointment from 12.30pm to 2.00pm, Monday to Friday. Legal Aid Office (ACT) The Legal Aid Office provides advice and assistance to all residents of the ACT on a range of legal issues including Mental Health Treatment Orders and the Mental Health Tribunal. Free legal advice is available over the phone. A free half-hour appointment with a solicitor can also be arranged. Legal representation is available for people who cannot afford a private solicitor (eligibility criteria apply). Migrant Resource Centre of the ACT The Migrant Resource Centre can arrange one free consultation with an immigration lawyer. Night Time Legal Advice Service The Night Time Legal Advice Service is open on Tuesday from 6.00pm to 8.00pm as a phone-in or drop-in service. Advice is given on most areas of law, including advice on employment matters. Ombudsman's Office The Ombudsman investigates complaints about actions or decisions of ACT and Commonwealth government agencies. Pro Bono Clearing House The Pro Bono Clearing House accepts applications for pro bono legal assistance from people who have a legal issue but who cannot afford professional legal fees. Forms are available online or by phone. Tenants Union ACT The Tenants Union provides free legal advice on tenancy issues in the ACT and also has tenancy information sheets available for ACT tenants. Open from 9.30am to 1.00pm, Monday to Friday, and on Tuesday from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Victims Services Scheme The Victims Services Scheme assists victims of crime to recover from the consequences of a crime committed against them. Provides counselling, rehabilitation, court support and help with preparing documents. Welfare Rights and Legal Centre The WRLC provides advice and assistance with a range of legal problems including income support (Centrelink, social security, student assistance and veterans' assistance), tenancy (private and government) and Legal Aid appeals. Open from 9.30am to 1.00pm, Monday to Friday, and on Monday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Women's Legal Centre The WLC provides legal information, advice and referrals for women with legal issues, including divorce and separation, disputes over children, property settlement, domestic violence, child support, going to court, sexual harassment, sex discrimination and workplace issues. The WLC phone advice line is available from 9.30am to 12.00pm, Monday to Friday, and face-to-face interviews are available by appointment.
